Since deciding to start this website, I’ve been entertaining the thought of posting a blog. I was ambivalent about the idea, because I feel as though any music I make will get measured against it. “Talking about music is like dancing about architecture”, as someone once said. (The origin of that quote is uncertain.) I imagine someone reading this, then listening and thinking, “This guy always writes about music, and this is what he has to show for it?” Sure, I’d like to think that my music is good. I certainly wouldn't bother sharing it with anybody if I didn't believe in it to some degree. But my objectivity is naturally limited. All I can do is the best I can do.
It’s been about a year since I last wrote a song. I’ve been busy trying to wrap up this album project, which has undergone many stops and starts in the recording process, not to mention several outside projects I took on. Songwriting got put on the backburner, because I don’t like to accumulate too large a backlog of ideas that I might never get around to.
By the time I’m ready to start writing songs again (which will hopefully be soon), most likely, that’s where I’ll be focusing most of my energy. So if this blog eventually becomes inactive, that may be why. Then again, with songwriting being fresh in my mind, maybe this blog will actually become more active? I guess time will tell.
But I do think about music a lot. And as a person who writes songs, I have a certain perspective, based on what role it plays in my life. Other people for whom music plays a very different role will have a different perspective. And even among fellow songwriters (or artists, or poets…or anyone who creates), no two perspectives are alike. So I suppose I’m envisioning this blog will serve as a gateway into some interesting conversations between music makers and music appreciators.
Consider this my experiment.
